How to Measure Your Head for a Wig (Step by Step)
A good fit starts with good measurements. All you need is a soft tape measure, a mirror and a few minutes. If you wear braids or cornrows under your units, measure with them in, so the numbers match how you will wear the wig.
What you need
- A soft (tailor’s) tape measure
- A mirror, or a friend to help
- Something to write the numbers down
The measurements
1. Circumference
Start at your front hairline in the middle of your forehead. Run the tape around the side of your head just above your ear, around the back at the nape (where your hairline ends at the neck), above the other ear and back to the start. Keep the tape snug but not tight.
2. Front to nape
Place the tape at your front hairline and run it straight back over the top of your head to the nape of your neck.
3. Ear to ear across the top
Measure from the top of one ear, over the crown, to the top of the other ear, following where your hairline meets the ear.
4. Ear to ear across the forehead
Measure from the top of one ear, along the front hairline, to the top of the other ear.
5. Temple to temple around the back
Measure from one temple, around the back of your head, to the other temple.
6. Nape width
Measure straight across the nape of your neck, from one side of your hairline to the other.
Tips for accurate numbers
- Measure twice and use the average.
- Write numbers in inches or centimetres, and say which one you used.
- Keep the tape flat against your head; twisted tape adds length.
