Wig Care Basics: Washing, Conditioning and Storing Human Hair
Human hair has no natural scalp oils reaching it once it is in a bundle or unit, so it needs a little help to stay soft and smooth. These are general care tips; always follow any specific care advice that comes with your hair.
Detangle before you wash
Use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers and work from the ends up to the roots. Never comb hair that is knotted from the top down.
Wash gently
- Use lukewarm water, not hot.
- Choose a sulphate-free shampoo.
- Smooth the shampoo down the hair in the direction it falls instead of rubbing or twisting.
- Rinse until the water runs clear.
Condition every time
Apply conditioner from the mid-lengths to the ends, keeping it away from the lace and knots. Leave it on for a few minutes, then rinse with cool water.
Dry with care
Blot with a microfibre towel; do not wring. Let the hair air-dry on a wig stand where possible.
Go easy on heat
Always use a heat protectant and the lowest temperature that works for you. Less heat means less dryness and fewer split ends.
Store it properly
- Keep units on a wig stand or mannequin head to hold their shape.
- For travel, plait or loosely tie the hair and store it in a satin or silk bag.
- Keep hair away from direct sun and damp places.
Sleep smart
Wrap your hair in a satin scarf or bonnet, or use a satin pillowcase, to reduce tangles and friction overnight.
